Omnia – Books & Beyond History

The predecessors of Omnia commenced operations in the early 1980s. At that stage, it was a privately owned and operated business which traded under the name, Darling Heights Booksellers.

It was located under the main stairs in R Block with its office staff residing in a shipping container positioned outside the building.

During this time, the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) was an autonomous multi-purpose college known as the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education (DDIAE).

By 1985, the Bookshop was managed by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) on behalf of the DDIAE. This arrangement lasted to the end of the decade when the DDIAE took its next step towards achieving full university status.

In 1990, DDIAE became the University College of Southern Queensland (UCSQ) under the sponsorship of the University of Queensland.

It was then in 1992 when the UCSQ achieved full university status and became the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). The Bookshop was then known as the USQ Bookshop and moved to a new location in W Block.

The USQ Bookshop remained there for nearly 20 years when in 2011 it again moved to its now current location in R Block (which incidentally was a breeze way).

In 2012, the Bookshop established a permanent presence at the Springfield campus in the Auditorium building.

The following year, a University staffed outlet was also established at the Fraser Coast campus in the new Library building.

With a Competitive Neutrality study being undertaken in 2013, it was decided that the Bookshop should obtain its commercial independence. This allows the Bookshop to compete on a ‘level playing field’.

Further, in recognition of this independence and the move away from textbooks as its core product, the Bookshop ran a competition in early 2014 looking for a new name.

After receiving over 500 entries, the name ‘Omnia – Books & Beyond” was chosen.

Accordingly, towards the end of 2014 and with substantial web development, the Bookshop was relaunched under its new name, Omnia – Books & Beyond.

In 2015 when USQ purchased the Ipswich campus from the University of Queensland, a fourth outlet was opened at that campus.

Following from that, the new Edgy Building at Springfield was opened in March 2015, where Omnia now has a presence along with providing a full Café experience.
